Freedom to Create

I would regard Aishling's work with the Freedom To Create project as providing a vibrant and contemporary dimension to the fabric of the visual arts practice within the county. Aishling is an inspiring community arts activist, She has an intuitive understanding of marrying community arts which are suitable to a local audience with contemporary professional artistic practice.
-Catherine Kelly  (Arts Officer)
Westmeath County Council

The Freedom To Create Project was a community arts project which took place in Kinnegad, Westmeath over 8 weeks beginning in May of 2011. This project was a collaboration between the artist, Westmeath VEC/ Midland Arts and Westmeath County Council under their Artist in Context Residency Scheme. The project provided a range of arts workshops with the goal of creating an exhibition. It allowed local people an outlet for creative expression while at the same time promoting an awareness of arts within the community. The workshops created an avenue through which the participants could freely express themselves through either photographic or video formats. Participants in turn expanded their existing skill set while undergoing and learning about the process of project concept development, production and presentation of their own works of art. The project was targeted towards the unemployed people in Westmeath. The participants showcased their work in exhibition, which was also exhibited again on Culture Night in September of 2011.
